Kannada Actress Ranya Rao Walks Free After Year-Long Gold Smuggling Detention

In a significant development in one of South India's high-profile gold smuggling cases, Kannada actress Harshvardhini Ranya (professionally known as Ranya Rao) walked out of prison on Wednesday after completing a year in preventive detention. The Revenue Intelligence Directorate chose not to challenge her release or seek an extension of custody under the COFEPOSA Act of 1974.

The actress was nabbed at Kempegowda International Airport on March 3, 2025, carrying 14.2 kilograms of foreign gold worth ₹12.56 crores while arriving from Dubai. DRI officials seized the contraband, marking the beginning of what would become a sprawling investigation into an international smuggling network.

Ranya Rao wasn't operating alone. Her associate Tarun Konduru Raju (also known as Virat Konduru), an American citizen, and Ballari-based jeweller Sahil Sakaria Jain have also been released from custody. While the trio had earlier received bail from the Special Court for Economic Offences, the central government's invocation of COFEPOSA kept them behind bars until now.

The investigation has unearthed the scale of this operation: officials discovered that the gang smuggled over 100 kilograms of gold into India between 2024-2025. The network was sophisticated: Tarun handled international transportation, while Sahil managed domestic sales and hawala transactions within the country.

What adds a dramatic twist to this case is Ranya Rao's family connection to senior IPS officer K. Ramachandra Rao, who is her stepfather. The officer faced questioning over allegations of official vehicles being used in the smuggling operations. Initially sent on compulsory leave after Ranya's arrest, he was later reinstated but currently remains under suspension following another controversy.

While the main accused have gained freedom from preventive custody, the investigation into this massive smuggling network continues. Reports suggest that customs officials who allegedly collaborated with Ranya's group are also under intense scrutiny, indicating this case is far from closed.
