Mollywood Power Player Falls: Director Ranjith Behind Bars After Fresh Sexual Assault Allegations

The Malayalam film industry's post-Hema Committee reckoning has claimed another high-profile casualty, with veteran director-producer Ranjith Balakrishnan arrested and remanded to 14 days judicial custody over fresh sexual assault allegations.

The case stems from a complaint by a young actress who alleged that Ranjith called her to his caravan during an ongoing film shoot and behaved inappropriately with sexual intent. The filmmaker was initially arrested in Thodupuzha while attending an event and later transferred to Kochi police for investigation.

What makes this particularly significant is the swift institutional response. The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) immediately recommended suspension of Ranjith's membership from the directors and writers unions. This marks a dramatic shift from the industry's historically protective stance towards powerful figures: a change directly attributable to the Hema Committee's explosive revelations about systemic abuse in Mollywood.

This isn't Ranjith's first brush with such allegations: in 2024, a case was registered against him after a Bengali actress filed a complaint over an incident dating back to 2009. He had previously stepped down as Kerala Chalachitra Academy chairman following harassment claims by Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra.

The timing couldn't be more telling. The Hema Committee report, finally released in August 2024 after being withheld since 2019, exposed an all-male power group of 15 industry figures who controlled casting decisions and careers. The report's release triggered a wave of accusations against prominent figures, ultimately leading to the dissolution of AMMA's entire executive committee.

Speaking to reporters after his arrest, Ranjith claimed he has been framed and denied the allegations. But his protestations ring hollow in an industry finally confronting its culture of impunity. Kerala's Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian made it clear that "such acts will not be accepted by the government or the society" and assured full support to the victim.

This arrest represents more than just another celebrity downfall: it's a litmus test for whether Malayalam cinema's promised reforms will translate into real accountability. For an industry that once seemed untouchable, the sight of a three-decade veteran being led away in handcuffs sends an unmistakable message: the old rules no longer apply.
