Naidu, Pawan Kalyan Back Delimitation After Centre's 50% Increase Assurance

The Centre's strategic intervention has successfully brought Telugu states on board for the upcoming delimitation exercise, following crucial meetings between Chandrababu Naidu, Pawan Kalyan, and Union ministers.

At a high-level discussion held at the Chief Minister's residence, senior alliance leaders expressed their initial apprehensions about the delimitation process. The primary concern centered around whether population-based redistribution would disadvantage southern states, which have successfully controlled their demographic growth compared to northern counterparts.

The breakthrough came when Naidu personally engaged with Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Arjun Ram Meghwal. Their categorical assurance that every state will witness a uniform 50 percent increase in Lok Sabha seats, irrespective of population dynamics, has fundamentally shifted the political calculus.

This formula is politically astute. By ensuring proportional increases across all states, the Centre has neutralized the north-south divide that threatened to derail the entire exercise. Southern states retain their current representation share while accommodating overall expansion of the Lower House.

The alliance leadership's decision to collectively support the proposal signals confidence in these assurances. Their commitment to counter 'misinformation' suggests they're prepared to defend this position against opposition criticism, particularly important given the sensitivity around representation in federal politics.

What remains intriguing is the Assembly seat component. While Union ministers promised clarity during Parliamentary discussions, the ambiguity around state legislature expansion could emerge as the next friction point. State leaders will likely seek similar guarantees for their Assembly constituencies.

The current disparity in constituency sizes across India makes this exercise complex. Some constituencies represent barely two lakh voters while others exceed twenty lakhs. The uniform increase approach sidesteps this imbalance rather than addressing it directly.

For Telugu states, this development removes a potential electoral landmine. Both TDP and Jana Sena can now support delimitation without facing accusations of compromising regional interests. The Centre's political management here deserves credit for preventing what could have become another contentious federal issue.
