Pushpa 2 Effect: Bollywood Now Demands 3.5-Hour Films, Says JD Chakravarthy

The phenomenal success of Pushpa 2 has triggered yet another seismic shift in how Bollywood approaches filmmaking: this time around movie runtimes. Director JD Chakravarthy revealed at a recent press meet that the Allu Arjun blockbuster's massive collections have completely reversed industry thinking on film duration.

According to Chakravarthy, a prominent Bollywood producer who previously imposed strict 2 hours 25 minutes limits on writers and directors is now demanding the opposite: films must run for a minimum of three and a half hours. This dramatic U-turn comes after Pushpa 2's 229-minute runtime proved that audiences will gladly sit through longer films if the content delivers.

The industry's obsession with following successful formulas is nothing new. When Baahubali became a pan-India phenomenon, Bollywood churned out period dramas like Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat, Tanhaji, and Kalank: though only a few managed to replicate that success at the box office.

What makes this runtime trend particularly fascinating is how it contradicts decades of conventional wisdom. Distributors and exhibitors have historically pushed for shorter films to accommodate more shows per day, maximizing revenue potential. Films like Arjun Reddy faced resistance for their 3-hour-plus durations.

But Pushpa 2 has rewritten those rules entirely. Despite criticism for its lengthy runtime, the Sukumar directorial has emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film domestically, collecting over ₹1,265 crores net in India alone. The film's worldwide gross of approximately ₹1,742 crores proves that when content resonates, runtime becomes irrelevant.

This shift reflects Bollywood's reactive approach to success stories rather than focusing on original storytelling. While following trends isn't inherently wrong, the key lies in understanding that Pushpa 2's success wasn't just about its length: it was about delivering a complete cinematic experience that justified every minute.
